"Airwolf: Season 3"
Reviewer:

Studio: Universal Home Video
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
6/26/07
Special Features: None
Review:

Old TV shows on DVD continues to take off and no other series took flight with fans of action shows quite like "Airwolf" did during its brief but spectacular flight on TV. Considering all the onset drama (and reported issues with Jan Michael-Vincent's problem with alcohol particularly during the third season) and the fact that the fourth season took some unusual twists and turns that fans didn't like very much, it was in the cards that the show wouldn't continue on. It's just as well because to most hardcore fans the fourth season simply doesn't exist in their minds. ***

Airwolf" fit the bill for high octane action entertainment (borrowing from the film "Blue Thunder") with simple Cold War storylines. Although a lot of fun, I doubt that most fans would take "Airwolf" all that seriously (at least I hope not). Flying faster than Mach 1, Airwolf was developed as a tactical weapon to get through enemy lines undetected with maximum fire power for defense. Developed by "The Firm" (no, not the bombastic rock group from the 90's but a covert C.I.A. cell). Moody pilot Stringfellow Hawke (Vincent) is asked to retrieve the helicopter when its creator steals it. Hawke ends up flying missions for "The Firm" and its leader Archangel (Alex Cord). His co-pilot is his friend the jovial Dominic (Borgnine). ---

Image & Sound:

This varies quite a bit. The show itself looks pretty decent with high levels of grain and occasional video noise as an occasional problem. Colors look decent but a bit muted and flat. The good news is that the series looks better here than in reruns on TV. As many fans know the series was cancelled after the third season on CBS and USA Network picked the show up for a final fourth season. That final season wasn't the best of the series since this show was always about action scenes and production values and USA Network just couldn't afford the same budgets as CBS could. ---

Special Features:

None worth noting beyond previews.

Final Words:

Although the show ran out of gas by the fourth season, many fans saw the needle was on "E" during the third season and didn't follow it to its new home on USA Network. No doubt we'll see the low budget fourth season soon as well but fans would do well to stick to the first three seasons of the show.
