The Review:

What’s an alien to do when he crash lands on Earth without a phone to call home? Move in with the local Los Angeles family he’s been annoying since he landed. In 1986 this sitcom became a surprise hit on NBC. Featuring a puppet as the lovable alien Alf, the series spawned an animated spin off as well. First I have to tell you up front I’m not a fan of this show. It just wasn’t funny to me. That said, I’m going to keep my critical comments to a minimum because I’m aware that there are a lot of fans of this series.

Image and Sound: Originally shot on video, “Alf” looks surprisingly good on DVD. The colors are bright and aren’t quite as vibrant as I thought they would be. The image quality is pretty good with most of the episodes looking fairly sharp with nice clarity. The bad news for fans is that these are the syndicated episodes of the series so each episode is missing two to three minutes. The mono soundtrack sounds pretty good as well. ---
The Extras:

While this doesn’t have the gag reel that was a highlight for fans of the first season, it does feature two bonus episodes of the animated series produced after this was cancelled. Once again we have the animated menus hosted by Alf discussing products for the Alf Shopping Network. This is actually a pretty clever send up of the Home Shopping Network. There’s a summary of each episode available if you click on the question mark. Alf himself tells you about the episodes. ---

Commentary: No commentary tracks.
Final Words: While these are the syndicated versions of the series, the image quality is pretty good overall. I don’t know if the original aired episodes no longer exist or if the copyright owner just shipped out the wrong masters to Lion’s Gate but I would have thought that this problem would have been corrected by now. Including the two bonus episodes of the animated series is a nice plus but I’m sure fans would much rather have the uncut episodes.
