The Review:

Like a black humor version of “Donnie Braco”, New York cop Mike Tozzi (Chris Noth “Law & Order” and “Sex and the City”) must infiltrate a mob loan sharking operation in New York. Tozzi must get close to Tommy “Bells” Bellavita (Robert Patrick “Ladder 49”) and “Buddha” Stanzione (Elliot Gould/st2:PersonName> “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Ocean’s Twelve”) two top mobsters the FBI has been trying to reach for years. Tozzi’s life suddenly gets more complicated when he falls in love with his informant’s sister (Dagmara Dominczyk “Kinsey”). This complicates things for Tozzi and his partner Cuthbert Gibbons (Colm Meaney “The Commitment”, “Deep Space Nine”). *** A very funny black comedy “Bad Apple” features stellar performances from Noth, Meaney, Patrick, Dominczyk and Gould.

Image and Sound: The transfer looks sharp has nice bright, vivid colors and looks better than a lot of theatrical transfers I’ve seen of late. The stereo sound is also quite good. Nice job from Paramount in the transfer department. ---
The Extras:

What no featurette on the frozen Easter hams buried in his informant’s trunk? It’s a pity there’s no extras but this is one funny movie and really should have been on the big screen vs. TV. Then again, it probably would have stiffed as it has no special effects and Darth Vader doesn’t appear. ---

Commentary: Sadly, no commentary track from actor Noth (his company co-produced the movie). I imagine Meaney would have provided some funny comments if asked but he wasn’t. ---
Final Words: A very funny black humor film that fans of “Get Shorty” and “Be Cool” will enjoy, “Bad Apple” is a lot of fun with strong performances from big screen and little screen vets. Image and sound quality is top notch but buy “Bad Apple” for the witty well written, directed and performed movie. Although it does take some small screen short cuts in the action, the film manages to overcome its origins from the small screen.
