Review:

Set in the future after Bruce Wayne has retired the cape and cowl but not from crime fighting "Batman Beyond" has continued to be both an intriguing concept and fun series for fans of the Dark Knight. Set fifty years in the future the series allows the melding of the classic mythology to a science fiction theme. The second season like the first has a number of very cool special features. ***

Terry McGinnis the son of a scientist at Wayne/Powers Industries takes on the Dark Knight's role with a new cutting edge Bat suit. More importantly Wayne provides guidance for Terry who initially is set upon revenge for the murder of his father. His father discovered during the first season that corporate raider Derek Powers who now owns what's left of Wayne Industries has been using Bruce's old company to manufacture a deadly nerve gas that he's been selling illegally to criminals. Suddenly the trouble prone Terry has a mission and a life again due to his interaction with Bruce Wayne. ***

The second season was just as bold at taking risks as the first. When the show was first premiered nearly seven years ago it represented a pretty bold risk on the part of Warner as they were extending and messing with the mythology of the original character by doing this extension. We get all 26 episodes on four discs. ---

Image & Sound:

The show looks pretty good given that it's nearly a decade old. Warner has done a very good job of presented the second season on four discs. Not surprisingly the second season suffers from some of the same compression issues as the first but overall the set looks pretty good. There is occasional softness in the image in a couple of episodes but again it's not a big distraction. ***

Audio for the show was originally presented in stereo and we get the original soundtrack here. This show would definitely benefit from a 5.1 presentation but I doubt that any of the seasons will get the upgrade.

Special Features:

We get a number of very cool special features. "Inside Batman Beyond: The Panel" is a discussion between producers Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett, Glen Murakami, Paul Dini moderated by Jason Hillhouse. The producers focus on the challenges and issues they faced in bringing the popular series back for a second season and building on the momentum of the first. ***

We also get two commentary tracks. "Splicers" features producers Bruce Timm and Glen Maurakami providing lots of interesting tidbits about the production of the episode. "Eggbaby" likewise has a terrific commentary track with a variety of the producers contributing. ---

Final Words:

"Batman Beyond" still manages to keep fans interest. It's a terrific extension of the Batman mythology. I'd love to see this one day turned into a theatrical live action feature and see what a talented director like Chris Nolan could do with it.
