Review:

OK "Baywatch" hop on your surf board because this is going to be one rough wave. I know this says it is the second season of "Baywatch" but it really isn't after all. The show first aired on NBC before being cancelled. The producers and studio essentially rebooted the series in syndication making changes to the basic structure of the show. This is the second season of the syndicated episodes (not the network show with many of the same characters, same name, etc.). It probably would have been better to call this "Season Three" since that is what we're seeing but because of concerns from the release company First Look that fans might not purchase the second season before picking up the first this has been titled "Season One". Perhaps it would have been better to call this "Season One: The Syndicated Series" but that probably would have confused some fans as well so we're stuck with the misleading tag. ---

Image & Sound:

The "Baywatch" babes probably haven't looked this good before now. The image quality varies a bit there are some digital compression issues that crop up now and again but on the whole the show looks pretty good. Dialogue comes across clear and clean throughout the set. ---

Special Features:

Special features are decent although featurettes on the production of the show, its cancellation and revival in syndication would have been preferable to what we get here. We get a trivia track and photo gallery. Most important for fans of the first season we get a couple of the first episode network season. Unfortunately for fans that want that first season alone (or the first season but don't want to purchase any sets after the show jumped the shark) the first season isn't available for purchase separately. I suspect that after all the seasons are released First Look will probably make the first season available separately but you'll have to wait a very long time for it. We get two episodes from the first "pilot" season "In Deep" (the second episode of the first season on NBC) and "Heat Wave" (the third episode shown on NBC). ---

Final Words:

Although this season is misleadingly titled (the studio should have gone with the original titles for season set-they were going to call the set "Collection One", "Collection Two", etc.) this is a pretty good season to get started with "Baywatch". Fans of the show will be disappointed they'll have to wait some time to get all the first season episodes but right now this is the only way to obtain them on DVD.
