“Beauty and the Beast: The Complete Third Season”
Reviewer:

Genre: TV Series
Release:
2/05/08
Special Features: Previews
Review:

SPOILER ALERT: ***

Figuring it was time for Vincent (Ron Perlman) and Catherine (Linda Hamilton) consummate their relationship (almost ALWAYS a mistake for a TV show where the two leads have great romantic chemistry but don't do the dirty deed), the producers decided it was time for bestiality --Catherine and Vincent have sex. You'd never know it by the coy way that we're told (rose buds springing open as a visual metaphor? You've got to be kidding!). Catherine becomes pregnant (no one asks if the baby will need diapers or a litter box). Gabriel an evil genius (is there any other kind?) played by Stephen McHattie kidnaps Catherine and is then killed. Vincent now has a mission--recover his child and make goo goo eyes at his new potential love interest (played by Jo Anderson). ***

For fans the third season was, in many respects, a slap in the face because a popular character was killed and the chemistry between Perlman and Anderson just doesn't gel on screen. The show will be enjoyed by long-time fans but those new to the show may find the brief (it was only 12 episodes as the struggling show was cancelled) third season disappointing to say the least. The show hasn't aged as well as I thought it would and to be quite honest after the first season, the show was like a kid riding skates downhill--the further along it went the more rapid it went to its own self destruction. ---

Image Sound:

The third season looks decent suffering from compression artifacts and issues with grain. Surprisingly, older shows such as "Wild Wild West" look much better than this show does on DVD. It won't be a big issue for fans but it is occasionally distracting. ***

Audio sounds fine with the original stereo soundtrack used for presentation. ---

Special Features:

Unlike the second season, we don't get any introductions to the episodes. There's no vintage behind-the-scenes interviews thrown into the mix either. It wouldn't have hurt the producers to do a little research and find a vintage gag reel.

Final Words:

Aside from strong performances from the cast, there's really no reason to recommend the third season of "Beauty and the Beast". It's like the last season of "Star Trek"; it appears like many of the episodes were made up as they went along (they weren't) and the writing is substantially weaker than the previous seasons. Fans will want to see the last season just for closure.
