Somebody needs to tell Chris Robinson the 70’s have
ended. When I look back at old pictures during the 80’s
and see some of the stuff that I wore (or thought was stylish)
I realize it’s a miracle that humanity has survived. We
have such god awful fashion sense sprouting up like weeds
in just about every decade. Luckily the stringy hair and
faux 70’s Salvation Army fashion sense of the Black Crowes
don’t take center stage but it sure is distracting it makes
me wonder---did Kate Hudson finally realize how her ex-husband
dressed and is that truly the reason they separated? Oh
and Chris shave off that faux facial hair. Seriously. It
looks like a skin diso rder. ***
The Black Crowes are nothing if not catchy and they’re
in top form in this concert video. Unfortunately we have
to watch a mix of montages, MTV unplugged performances and
studio work while we are listening and listen to them talk
of how “music is their lives”, etc. Guys just shut up and
sing! If we wanted philosophy we’d be watching a video on
Kant or Schopenhauer. This is one of the major flaws with
the concerts Paul McCartney has released over the last couple
of years—too little music and too much other stuff. We do
get some complete performances of a single song—but I would
have preferred a single concert with individual performances
as bonus tracks.
The songs include: “Black Moon Creeping” –Studio “Thick
N’ Thin” –Montage “Jealous Again”- Music Video “You’re Wrong”
–MTV Unplugged “Sometimes Salvation” – Studio “Twice As
Hard” –Montage “Hard to Handle” “Jealous Guy” –Live in Atlanta
“Hotel Illness” –Montage “She Talks to Angels” “Sister Luck”
–Montage “Thorn in My Price” “My Morning Song” – Europe
Montage “Stage It Cold” – Europe Montage “Remedy” “Thick
N’ Thin” “No Speak No Slave” –Montage “Sting Me”
Image & Sound:
Shot in HD the video images vary a bit by design. The
concert footage is gritty looking and grainy avoiding the
glossy over processed look of a music video. The camera
work puts you right up on stage most of the time with plenty
of close ups for full performances of a single song and
the annoying habit of cutting to footage backstage or elsewhere
that was a hallmark of their last video isn’t as dominant
here. The 5.1 mix is terrific with nice separation and full
bodied like a great glass of wine with plenty of kick after
you’ve taken that musical sip. There’s also a solid 2.0
mix for those who just want to rock out while working on
their computers. ---
