“Brotherhood: The Complete First Season
Reviewer:
Wayne Klein
Studio: Showtime Entertainment
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
10/3/06
Special Features: Commentary on one episode by writer/creator Blake Masters and writer/producer Henry Bromell; “Power Map: An Interactive Guide to the Characters”
Review:

The critically acclaimed series “Brotherhood” takes an unusual twist to the traditional gangster story; two brothers from a working class Irish family pursue their destinies in opposite directions; Michael Caffee (Jason Isaccs most familiar to American audiences from “The Patriot” and the “Harry Potter” films) dives into a life of crime while his brother Tommy (Jason Clarke) pursues his destiny in politics trying to make positive change. Tommy is a rising star in Rhode Island politics. Michael returns to Rhode Island after the murder of mob boss Patty Mullin. Mullin had plans to kill Michael if he returned to his hometown. With Patty out of the way Michael resumes his life of crime picking up where he left off but finds. He finds his life immediately complicated by Tommy’s position as another mob boss Freddie Cork threatens to finish Patty’s plans to kill Michael unless Tommy throws construction contracts to Freddie’s companies. Both brothers face the challenges of their chosen path and how the compromises of their lifestyle change them. All of this occurs in just the first episode of the series which will give viewers an idea as to how complex and compel ling this series can be. ***

Surprisingly the show is inspired by a real life Irish American family with similar circumstances. Gangster James Bulger and Senator William Bulger from Massachusetts. ---

Image & Sound:

“Brotherhood” looks quite good in this DVD transfer with a nice crisp, sharp picture. Blacks are rock solid and skin tones accurate. The 5.1 audio mix has nice clarity and depth. ---

Special Features:

In addition to the single commentary track by writer/producer/creator Blake Masters and writer/producer Henry Bromell on the episode entitled “Ecclesiastes 7:2” (for those unfamiliar with the show each episode title comes from a passage in the Bible). We also get a “Power Map” an interactive guide that provides a guide for viewers as to all the relationships, power struggles and issues that both separate and bring the various characters of the series together. While the set is a bit light on extras the 11 episodes included from the first season of this Showtime series are compelling viewing. ---

Final Words:

A well acted drama “Brotherhood” looks extremely good in its presentation on DVD but falls short in the area of extras. Still the price is right for what you’re getting although, again, I personally felt that Showtime could have extended themselves a bit more including more extras.
