Since The Untouchables in 1959, Quinn Martin Productions
has been bringing action, mystery, and suspense to television
viewers with other shows such as The Fugitive, The F.B.I.,
The Invaders, and Barnaby Jones, and The Streets of San
Francisco with heroes -- whether they have a badge, working
on behalf of the "little guy", or thrust into extraordinary
situations (such as framed for murder), as they're relentless
in the quest for justice. With season two Jake and the Fatman
about to be release, the larger-than-life William Conrad
continues the good fight as Cannon. ***
The premise of the series is Frank Cannon, an ex-cop
who leaves the LAPD to become a private investigator. He
charges expensive fees to his rich clientele so he can paid
for his luxurious lifestyle as well as for his Lincoln Continental
Mark IV. However, not only was Cannon a big man tough on
crime, but he was also a big teddy bear, as his reason for
charging the wealthy at a hefty fee so he can assist the
downtrodden and needy for little or no charge at all. ***
In its second season, Cannon ranked in the Top 20 (#14),
with guest stars that includes Monkee Mickey Dolenz, future
Battlestar Galatica heartthrob Richard Hatch (Apollo), future
TV doc Mike Farrell (MASH, Providence), and future crime-fighters
Robert Pine (CHiPs) and Stefanie Powers (Hart to Hart).
The second season has been split in two on DVD, as the first
volume features twelve episodes, as Cannon's case files
include going undercover to find a missing Vietnam vet,
taking on a drug-dealing doctor, uncovering the truth in
a blackmailing case, and helping clear a friend of murder
charges. ***
