Review: |
"After the
blood come the boys……like sniffing dogs." Piper Laurie & Sissy
Spacek form a superb Grand Guignol tandem as mother & daughter
in Brian DePalma's potent adaptation of Stephen King's "Carrie".
I had forgotten how much so until I gave this Special Edition
DVD another viewing. Spacek & Laurie's performances still resonate
after all these years. And more's the pity that Hollywood was
never really able to figure out what to do with Laurie's luminous
talent.(I will always remember her turns in this film & "The
Hustler" from way back in 1961.) That said, I won't go into
much plot detail here as most people are already familiar with
the story of Carrie White, the put-upon High School Senior with
telekinetic powers who wreaks vengeance on her classmates during
the Senior Prom. But I will say that this is one of the better
satirical horror films I've ever seen. And I still experienced
the same pang of remorse when one of the more sympathetic characters
in the film is seemingly killed at random. As a matter of fact,
screenwriter Cohen, in the documentary "Visualizing Carrie",
explains why DePalma chose to eliminate this character at the
end of the film. The film is, I feel, an improvement on King's
novel and anyone with a taste for horror should have a good
time viewing this DVD. |
| Image
and Sound: |
I'm honestly
not familiar with the original DVD version of this film. However,
this new Special Edition certainly looks and sounds wonderful.
It comes with two different options in sound: the superior Digitally
Enhanced 5.1 English as well as the original English mono. Although
why anyone would choose the mono version over the former is
a mystery to me. Anyway, kudos to DePalma and crew for a fabulous
job on the DVD. Image & sound are both superb. |

Extras: |
Now here is where this Special
Edition DVD has it all over most of its competition. Speaking
from the perspective of a movie-lover, "Acting Carrie", the
lead doc., is a thoroughly entertaining exploration of the
filmmaking craft. It contains interviews with DePalma, Jack
Fisk(one of the film's art directors, who would eventually
become Sissy Spacek's husband), Spacek, Laurie, Allen, Katt,
Buckley, & Soles, among others, and its 45 minutes breezes
by before you even realize it.
The second doc. "Visualizing Carrie"
is equally as captivating but deals more with the technical
aspects of bringing this film to life. DePalma, Fisk, screenwriter
Lawrence D. Cohen, among others lead us behind the scenes
and show us exactly what went into each & every aspect of
the making of this film. Fascinating stuff, especially for
true film buffs. The featurette "Carrie - The Musical" is
brief and somewhat negligible as it doesn't shed much light
on what was ultimately a disastrous venture.
The rest of the extras contain an
animated photo gallery, the original theatrical trailer, as
well as "Stephen King & The Evolution of Carrie", an interesting
text-only feature that explores how King came up with the
idea, the writing process, from novel to script, and finally
a comparison of book & film. ***

Words: |
In summary,
I feel any fan of the horror genre or film in general, will
be pleasantly surprised by this new edition of Carrie. Even
those viewing the film for the first time will be highly entertained
as "Carrie" is a potent satirical horror film that still holds
up after all these years. |
