"Charmed" is plain and simple not
my cup of witches brew. It's a show that I've never got into,
and a show I don't get, and a show that I just plain really
don't care to watch. I'm not going to devote an hours worth
of my time to a series that exists because the three lead
actresses are stunningly attractive. If that were the case,
I'd just watch reruns of "Charlie's Angels," which this show
appears to be inspired off of, not to mention a slight little
mindset of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." The word on the street
is that this is an intelligent show, but everytime I watch
it, I'm plagued with dialogue that goes something like this:
"go away horny tom cats," "you are a warlock magnet," and
this little gem "if Piper and Leo don't screw, then I'm screwed."
Please, gag me with a magic wand.******
The show is like a teenie bopper
show for people who are actually 18-23 but still think they're
13. I'm surprised there's no product placement in the show
advertising for adult training bras. As far as the concept
of the show goes, we've got three hot sisters named Piper,
Phoebe, and Prudence. All three of them are like modern day
witch-like sisters bickering back and forth like an Aaron
Spelling sitcom ---------"This Is a Aaron Spelling Show"
anyway we've got scenes of them fighting off demons and anything
else that wants to steal their power. I liked it better when
it was called "The Powerpuff Girls." At least that show was
supposed to be funny and was. Actually, I'm not really sure
if this show is supposed to be funny. If it is, then it really
is not. If it isn't, then it's just stupid.*******
In the 2nd season, a lot of the
emotional backdrop deals with the Prudence character who lost
her boyfriend at the end of the 1st season. She's reluctant
to join her sisters in a fight against an evil demon who steals
their prized book. This creates tension at her art gallery
job where she becomes aware that someone has a crush on her,
as a result of her sending him mixed signals. Phoebe spends
most of her time in classes, then meets a guy at a dating
service, but then has to save him from an evil Succubus. Mixed
in with demons and the succubus, other villains who come and
go range from warlocks, to other witches, and even the Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse. As far as the other plot device
goes, Piper struggles to raise a lot of money to open up her
own dance club. Does the club open? Of course it does, otherwise
what would be done with the guest appearences by The Cranberries,
The Goo Goo Dolls, Paula Cole, etc.******
Other episodes include "The Devil's
Music" where the manager of Dishwalla makes a pact with the
devil to give him fame and fortune. This never happened to
The Pet Shop Boys! "She's a Man, Baby, a Man" is like going
back in time to when all of those switcheroo comedies of the
late 80's were popular. Only this is one of the bad ones.
In order to lure a Succubus, Prudence casts a spell, only
it turns her into a man. I shouldn't say it's "bad," I guess.
It is, after all, better than "The Hot Chick." In "Give Me
a Sign," Piper and Phoebe cast a spell in order to help Piper
choose between Leo and Dan. What happened to just flipping
a coin? 50% of the time, it's worked wonders for me! The season
ends with "Be Careful What You Wish For" where French Stewart
plays the same damn role he plays in everything he's in. This
time, the squity wonder is a genie who is sent by a Dragon
Warlock to capture the sisters' powers, and in turn grant
them wishes.
