“Cheers - Season 9”

Review:

Cheers returns for another season on DVD, at long last. Running from 1982-1993, the show was one of the most famous that NBC ever showed. It's not surprising the show remains beloved, thanks in no small part to its simplistic yet effective plot, and a memorable cast. ***

This 5-disc set includes all of the episodes from Season 9, which aired from 1990-1991. The episodes featured here are as follows: Love Is A Really Really Perfectly Okay Thing, Cheers Fouls Out, Rebecca Redux, Where Nobody Knows Your Name, Ma Always Liked You Best, Grease, 200th Anniversary Special (double-length episode), Breaking In Is Hard To Do, Bad Neighbor Sam, Veggie-Boyd, Norm And Cliff's Excellent Adventure, Woody Interrupts, Honor Thy Mother, Achilles Hill, The Days Of Wine And Neuroses, Wedding Bell Blues, I'm Getting My Act Together And Sticking It In Your Face, Sam Time Next Year, Crash Of The Titans, It's A Wonderful Wife, Cheers Has Chill, Carla Loves Clavin, Pitch It Again Sam, Rat Girl, Home Malone, and Uncle Sam Wants You. ***

The cast of Cheers is one of the things that made it such a great series. Amongst its ranks were Ted Danson, Kirstie Alley, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson, Kelsey Grammar, and George Wendt. Through the course of the show's run, all of these actors remained consistently excellent, and it's no surprise that the show won a number of awards for these performances. Additionally, Kelsey Grammar would go on to star in the equally-successful spin-off series, Frasier. ***

It isn't hard to see why the show has stood the test of time. In addition to a terrific cast, the series always maintained a plot that was easy to follow, yet worked so well. You know a show is doing something right when it runs for eleven seasons! ---

Image And Sound:

Sadly, the ninth season doesn't mark an improvement over the transfers of earlier seasons. This picture is still unrefined and showing its age, it's obvious Paramount didn't give the show any sort of remastering. The show's audio is mostly dialogue, and all of it comes across clear.

Special Features:

Why couldn't Paramount hunt down the cast and crew to record some interviews or commentaries?

Final Words:

Fans of the show should go right ahead and add this set to their DVD collections, but just the same you'll wish there were some bonus features.
