Review: |
The seven deadly sins had a field
day during the third season of “Dallas”. The third season
opens with the kidnapping of J.R. (Larry Hagman) and Sue Ellen’s
(Linda Gray) baby and ends with a huge TV cliffhanger that
prompted much discussion in its day. Who shot J.R. and will
he live? Well we all know the answer to the latter but the
answer to the former may surprise new fans to the series.
It’s a nicely set up mystery that played out over the opening
part of season four of this popular series.

and Sound: |
Another
stellar transfer from Warner Home Video, “Dallas” looks as bright
as the sunny skies in the Lone Star State on a beautiful spring
day. Vibrant colors abound and the image quality is, for the
most part, sharp with extremely good clarity. The mono sound
comes across with nice presence with crisp, clear dialog. ---

Extras: |
An excellent
documentary that looks at the phenomenal popularity of the
series and the introduction of the season ending cliff hanger
to TV. Although serials (the direct descent of most TV series)
had used the cliffhanger routinely and effectively to lure
audiences back into theaters during the 30’s and 40’s, the
format hadn’t been used effectively again until “Dallas” revived
it during season three. The creator, key cast members and
production members are interviewed in this documentary discussing
the media frenzy that resulted from the “Who Shot J.R.?” cliffhanger.

Two trivia
packed commentary tracks from Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray are
a highlight of this set. The two episodes were important ones
for the series with “A House Divided” being the pivotal episode
of season three. -- |

Words: |
As a prime
time soap “Dallas” set the bar very high with its continuously
inventive twists. The third season features 25 episodes nicely
transferred with sharp images and bright, vivid colors. The
documentary and commentary tracks provided icing on this very
warm cake. |
