This charming story was first released in 1936, 70 years
ago, but with the new color remastering process you will
find it hard to believe this child star, who is now 78 yrs
old, isn’t actually only 8 yrs old today. This new process
really gives the movie a new life.
In Dimples, a 1936 classic about a poor side of town
6-year-old street entertainer, sharing a rundown apartment
with her scoundrel of a grandfather, the Professor. When
Dimples and her group of street urchins of performers are
asked to perform at a rich lady's party, the Professor pulls
a fast one ruining everyone's good time by five-fingering
the guests' furs. Dimples is caught by the police but negotiates
her freedom from her hostess, Caroline, with nothing more
than her dimples and innocence. The lonely widow is so taken
by Dimples that soon she's offering the money-grubbing but
goodhearted Professor Five thousand dollars for the girl.
No amount of money, of course, could buy Dimples from her
grandpa, whom she considers "a gentleman and a scholar,"
but when he winds up in a heap of trouble for letting $800
slip through his fingers, money that was supposed to go
toward costumes for a play in which Dimples stars. The professor’s
only hope is to cash in on Caroline's desire to acquire
Dimples. Bill Robinson directs all Temple's dance numbers,
which is one reason why Shirley Temple became a movie icon.
This multitalented actress touches the hearts of all in
this sentimental film. This movie is vintage Shirley. If
you enjoy a movie that pulls on your heart stings with many
musical numbers you will enjoy this movie. It’s a great
addition to any collection.
