Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Doogie Howser (Neil
Patrick Harris), as Doogie Howser ended it’s run after season
4 with a grand total of 97 episodes (3 shy of that magic
100 number for syndication). For me, Doogie on DVD is a
renaissance of sort, as these are episodes I haven’t seen
since they originally aired and let me tell you, I was a
lot younger then. ***
It’s disappointing that Season 4 was the end for the
show about the teenage doctor as it was a highly fun concept
that was executed quite well. Season 4 includes the Emmy
award winning episode “Doogie Got A Gun”, in which Doogie
wrestles with the idea of buying a gun after the family
is robbed. It is the highlight of season 4 although the
series finale is done pretty well, with Doogie viewing his
genius as a curse rather than a gift and he starts exploring
opportunities outside the field of medicine. ***
Image and Sound:
Season 4’s visuals are on par with Season 3. There’s
not much improvement, as the source material, video instead
of film, is hard to make look really good (not much of a
step above broadcast quality). The sound is steady, sounding
just as good (or bad, depending on what you consider good)
as the previous seasons ***

Considering this season picked
up an Emmy, I would have at least enjoyed a commentary by
Neil Patrick Harris and Co. on that episode. It shouldn’t
have been too hard, considering then NPH to do new interviews
for the sets. As is stands, we’re treated to interviews by
co-stars Lawrence Pressman and Kathryn Layng. There about
as informative as the interviews on previous season sets but
since they aren’t what I’d call integral characters, their
contributions were a little vapid for my taste. What can I
say, I was a fan of Neil and Max, not these two. *** |

Final Words:
|
If Doogie Howser was your thing
back in the day, or you’re looking to check out some earlier
work from Neil Patrick Harris if you’re a fan of “How I Met
Your Mother” than don’t hesitate to rent of buy Dooge Howser
Season 4. You just can’t go wrong with any season of Doogie
as all of them had their fair share of hits and misses. Enjoy
the DVD’s and lets hope for a reunion show down the line,
maybe have it take place during an episode of ER? *** |
