The wait is
over folks, and the new Dream Theater disc 'Train of Thought'
has hit the shelves. For those of you poor souls that tried
to download the disc and got the WRONG thing (someone shared
the supposed disc on P2P file sharing, but it was NOT Dream
Theater), you can now hear the right recording! It's fair
to say that Dream Theater set out to make a dark, intense,
and heavy album this time out, because this thing absolutely
tears it up. Think the 'SDOIT' track 'The Glass Prison' and
you have an idea of the direction this thing heads in. Heavy,
shred-y, riffy, are adjectives that are accurate, but not
without the melodic, technical, dynamic character that is
only DT. For guitar enthusiasts, Petrucci turns in one of
his best ever performances; ala 'chops-fest'. It's truly amazing
what he does with a guitar, and HIS TONE, WOW! This killer
disc starts off with the riff-laden 'As I Am' which is reminiscent
of '6:00' meets 'Peruvian Skies'. The second track 'This Dying
Soul' is a continuation of 'The Glass Prison' which appeared
on 'SDOIT', and has enough changes to make your head spin.
The ease of which Petrucci and Rudess pull off unison runs
is staggering. Perhaps the best track here is the absolutely
genius 'In The Name Of God' which may be perhaps one of DT's
best moments ever. It is safe to say that Dream Theater rules
the land of progressive metal once again with this 5 star
outing
My vote for
one of the 5 discs of the year, easy. Amazing musicianship,
memorable melodies, killer riffs, and head spinning twists
and turns make this almost unbelievable. Did I mention the
musicianship? 9.5 of 10 and a no brainer. Eric Louis
