Things in the E.R. were changing
during the third season of the show.

| Image
and Sound: |
An exceptionally
good transfer highlights this set. Please note that while this
show was broadcast in 1.33:1 aspect ratio, this DVD release
is cropped for 1.78:1 or a widescreen aspect ratio. Some fans
may be disappointed that the series is available in only the
latter format but the advantage to those with widescreen sets
is that the image will fill the screen. Detail is sharp and
colors nicely reproduced. Luckily Warner Home Video has a chapter
directly after the opening titles making it convenient to skip
this section as you watch the series. The audio has nice presence
with crisp, clear dialog. You’ll every word of the medical jargon
thrown around in this series like confetti at a party. There’s
a nice balance between dialog, music and sound effects. ---

| The
Extras: |
We get
two featurettes. “ER Specialists: Fear of Flying” focuses
on the making of one of the series’ most popular and powerful
episodes with interviews featuring Noah Wyle, Sherry Sringfield
and Gleanne Headly as well as members of the production crew.
“The Nurse’s Station” features the actors that have occupied
the role of nurse throughout the third season. Most of the
interviews here are with the supporting cast. ***
We also
get 17 deleted scenes and the third season gag reel. Personally,
I always find most gag reels to be the highlight of any collection.
This one is no exception. There’s also a trailer for the “ER”
game.

| Commentary:
|
We have two
commentary tracks for “Union Station” featuring director Tom
Moore, editor Kevin Casey and “Whose Appy Now? With the director,
editor, writer plus cast regular Noah Wyle and guest star Veronica
Cartwright. Both are pretty good with the latter being the better
of the two because it also features the acting perspective nicely
represented. --- |
| Final
Words: |
A great
set from Warner Home Video, “ER-The Complete 3rd Season” looks
very good and has some nice extras to fill out the set. If you’re
a fan of the series you may be upset that its being presented
in widescreen here but, trust me, when you purchase a widescreen
TV a couple of years down the line you’ll be a happy camper.
