Let me be honest I stopped watching "E.R." after the
sixth season of the series. It had become repetitive and
most of the innovative storytelling that was a highlight
of earlier seasons was missing. We still had plenty of soap
opera moments and story arcs that continued to carry on
from previous seasons but the show had lost much of its
luster. Change can be a good thing for a series if it prevents
it from becoming so homogenized that risky storytelling
is a hallmark. That was missing from the seventh season
in my mind. Sometimes the show was quirky just to be quirky
(like the episode where the guy in the possum outfit bit
the guy dressed as a kangaroo) but other times it appeared
that the show was in search of itself. Nevertheless hardcore
fans will be pleased with the show as there was some closure
for some older characters and new dilemmas for others. ---
Image & Sound:
Warner continues to do a terrific job with the transfers
for the show. I did notice some mild shimmer in a couple
of episodes but otherwise the colors are on target and the
show is free of both digital and analog defects. Audio sounds
terrific with nice placement of sound effects and ambient
sounds. ---

The fact that Warner is still including any sort of
special features this late in the game is a big plus. We
get deleted scenes and the gag reel. Should they have done
a commentary track or two? Again, since many fans began
to abandon the show during season five, it would be nice
to have a featurette on developments of the show, characters
introduced and changes that had impacted the series over
previous seasons. It's not a big thing but it would have
been a nice extra feature. I'm happy though that Warner
is still making the effort at including any sort of extras
at this stage. Those "previously on E.R." intros work wonders
but it would be nice to have the same info in one place.

Final Words:
|
As I stated, this was a season
that I had not seen (except for the season finale) so it was
nice to get reintroduced to the show. The quality of the writing
slipped after the fifth season to my mind but the best shows
here continued to feature high quality writing and performances.
