One of the original players of NBC's Thursday night-line
up, Family Ties followed the cultural and political differences
between 60s hippie radicals Steven (Michael Gross) and Elyse
Keaton (Meredith Baxter-Birney) and elder, yuppie Republican
son Alex (Michael J. Fox). Brian Bosnell joins the cast
as little Andrew, who's now four years old and looks up
to big brother Alex. ***
Season five consists of all 30 episodes -- including
several two-part episodes such as Fox's Emmy-winning performance
when Alex struggles to come to terms with the death of a
friend. Season five also brings affairs of the heart, as
Alex becomes single again when he and Ellen (Tracy Pollan)
broke up; he then tries "Starting Over" by dating someone
similar to Ellen. Pressure by the demands of college, Mallory
(Justine Bateman) wants to be Mrs. Nick Moore (Scott Valentine);
in other words, "Mrs. Wrong". Their relationship will have
its ups and downs during this season. The two-part finale
finds Jennifer (Tina Yothers) seeking to be with the "popular"
crowd, but soon realized that even being popular has its
disadvantages. ***
