An unusual drama that mixed fantasy with drama to great
effect during the 70's, "Fantasy Island" managed to entrance
viewers throughout its long run on ABC. Part of the appeal
was the mysterious Mr. Roarke who many fans thought of as
"God" (it must have been the white suit. It set a trend.
Remember "Bruce Almighty"?) and the other part probably
had to do with the mystery of what Tattoo was saying. Honestly,
I couldn't figure out what it was half the time. ***
For six years visitors to Fantasy Island could relive
their past and change things that had occurred, be other
people and generally mess with their lives. The good news
is that none of it was permanent and Mr. Roarke was always
there with a lesson in hand to pass along to whomever his
latest victim was. Columbia Tristar has done a nice job
of transferring "Fantasy Island". The high definition transfer
looks surprisingly crisp with nice colors and solid blacks.
While there are the expected analog flaws given the show's
age the remaster looks exceptionally good. ---

Although we don't get the commentary
tracks I was hoping for, the two featurettes on the show with
vintage and current interviews gives us an interesting look
into the world of "Fantasy Island". In addition to the 1977
original pilot movie we also get the second 1978 TV movie
"Return to Fantasy Island" and the 14 episodes that made up
the first season. Columbia has done a nice job in putting
all this together with chapter stops that are nicely placed
throughout the episodes. Hopefully season two will have commentary
tracks for the series from surviving cast/crew members. ---

Final Words:
|
Looking like a fantasy, the
first season of the popular series "Fantasy Island" deplanes
just in time for fans of the series. The episodes look extremely
good given the age of the negatives and with the high definition
remaster you can just about make out those nasty coffee stains
that Mr. Roarke tried to hide from Tattoo (OK, OK, so there
probably weren't any coffee stains. Maybe he didn't even drink
coffee but there has to be some explanation for his amazing
energy level...maybe cocaine?). Anyhow, the show looks extremely
good and the extras are pleasing as well giving a bit of background
on the show, guest stars and direction of the first season.
So disembark and enjoy your own fantasy in paradise! |
