Review:

'Feast' joins 'Snakes On a Plane' as a campy horror film that knows it is campy and is damn proud of it. It does not apologize for that fact and has a lot of fun with it. The film was the subject of the third season of the Bravo reality TV show 'Project Greenlight' by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They even lent their name for a producer credit along with horror master Wes Craven. I can only imagine how entertaining it would have been if Affleck/Damon were in this film.***

We open our story in a tavern located in a small town. You have a group of locals played by Henry Rollins, Josh Zuckerman, Jason Mewes, Krista Allen, Balthazar Getty, Jenny Wade and many others. Everything appears to be normal at this bar. People are playing pool, drinking, hitting on women, and enjoying themselves. Just your ordinary night at the bar, nothing too out of the abnormal.***

That is until a stranger arrives with the head of a bizarre creature. The creature can best be described as a cross being a pig, my ex-girlfriend, an alien, and a tremor all in one. Now that is one ugly, ugly creature if I do say so myself. They are coming for this town after being let loose from a research facility. Everyone at the bar must remain calm, survive, and fend off these hungry animals. They love to eat humans.***

First time director Josh Gaulager is stylish behind the camera and not shy about using blood, guts, and some very neat costumes. The film has the look and design of an 'Evil Dead' film or an old zombie movie from the 70s. He also loves to expose cleavage and breasts and drench every pretty woman in the film in pounds and pounds of blood. I give major props to the costume and design of this film. They really went all out and it shows.***

The writers also take time to throw in a lot of in jokes and lighter moments along the way. The film never takes itself too seriously. It also has some terror moments of things jumping out of the blue. It helps that the creatures in this film were damn ugly and slimy. I wish I knew what they were. If they had a name or how to even describe them. You just have to see them. It's not a pretty sight. The film is able to blend comedy, camp, and real horror into an entertaining, very gory, and fun horror film.*** ---

Image & Sound:

The Wide-screen transfer shows all the stylish gore in a great looking DVD. It's at times a very dark, gloomy and graphic horror film, but when it is time to show the gore, the colors light up the screen.

Special Features:

First up was deleted scenes and the film runs a total at 92 minutes and the length is perfect. The deleted scenes do not work. No need for the extra stuff. But if you are curious about them, you can check them out on the DVD. Some good outtakes are included and you can tell the cast had a lot of fun with this movie. The Blood and Guts of Gary Tunnicliffe shows all the great work done by the the costume and design departament I was talking about earlier. This guy knows this stuff.***

Horror Under the Spotlight: Making Feast tells about the film getting made via the TV show, how they came up with the idea of the film, and what they were trying to accomplish. Lastly is commentary by the filmmakers. This is OK, but at times slowly paced.

Final Words:

I'm not quite sure why this film did not get a wider release or more attention. It is better than 90 percent of the horror films we see out nowadays. It will be released in over 100 markets before it gets released on DVD. I think it might be better suited to see at the theater. Since you can enjoy all the sounds, guts, and laughs on the big screen and have a lot of fun. This is a great Midnight maintee film to see with friends. You'll have a lot of fun with it.
