“Friends with Money”
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Sony Home Video
Genre: Comedy
Release:
8/29/06
Special Features: Commentary track by director Nicole Holocener and producer Anthony Bregman; “Behind The Scenes of ‘Friends with Money’”, premiere footage for both the L.A. and Sundance Festival showings, trailers, widescreen and full screen versions of the film
Review:

A complete waste of time except for some solid performances “Friends with Money” lives up to its title—it’s about Olivia (Jennifer Aniston) a house cleaner who remains friends with her wealthy married friends Franny (Joan Cusack), Jane (Frances McDormand) and Christine (Catherine Keener). Each character has a crisis that impacts their relationship with the underachieving Olivia. ***

It’s as if director Nicole Holocener watched too many Woody Allen and Nora Ephron films back to back and tried to channel their spirit for this indie disaster. It’s as unfunny as can be and worse than Allen or Ephron’s worst films. ---

Image & Sound:

A marvelous looking transfer for an underachieving film “Friends with Money” looks exceptionally good here with both the widescreen and full screen versions of the film on the same disc. The dialogue comes across with nice presence with dialogue crisp and clear. ---

Special Features:

Writer/director Nicole Holofcener provides an interesting commentary track occasionally funny commentary track with producer Anthony Bregman. We also get a typical “Behind-The-Scenes” featurette with the cast and crew. We also get footage from the L.A. premiere of the movie as well as a featurette on the film’s Sundance premiere. A number of trailers for other films are included as well.

Final Words:

A film as underachieving as the main character “Friends with Money” is a rental only. Fans of the actors may want to check out this film but otherwise I’d suggest avoiding this.
