It's taken over six months, but we finally have the
second half of the first season of The Fugitive on DVD.
A classic television series, it's great to see the it finally
get its long overdue DVD release. Unfortunately, Paramount
has opted to do these “half season” sets, rather than release
the complete season at once. ***
Part two picks up where part one left off. The journey
continues as Dr. Richard Kimble, played brilliantly here
by David Janssen, continues his run from the law. His wife
was murdered by a one-armed criminal, and he has falsely
been accused of the crime. A dedicated police chief, played
by Barry Morse, is determined to uphold justice and put
Kimble behind bars, believing him to be the guilty party.
As the accused runs from town to town in an effort to escape
the long arm of the law, he takes menial jobs to stay undercover
- but the fact that he has a doctor's education often raises
a brow of suspicion. The chase continues, with the law growing
ever closer. ***
The Fugitive is an absolutely brilliant television
series, worthy of its classic reputation. The storyline
is strong, even by today's standards, and the characters
all realistic and interesting. It's a classic in every sense
of the words, with acting as brilliant as its script. ***
The set includes all 15 episodes from the latter half
of the show's first season. The episodes are as follows:
The Garden House, Come Watch Me Die, Where The Action
Is, Search In A Windy City, Bloodline, Rat In A Corner,
Angels Travel On Lonely Roads (Two-Parter), Flight From
The Final Demon, Taps For A Dead War, Somebody To Remember,
Never Stop Running, The Homecoming, Storm Center, and The
End Game. The episodes are divided amongst four discs, which
come in your typical hinged flap package. ***
Like most Paramount DVD releases of recent years, this
one claims that some episodes may have been edited from
the original television airings, and that some music has
been changed. Again, I don't see why they can't just come
out and explicitly state, in detail, exactly what has been
edited. ---
Image And Sound:
Paramount has impressed me a great deal with their
treatment of this show on DVD. The image quality is incredible
for a show this age, and grain in the picture is minimal.
This is about as good as you can make a black and white
TV series look on DVD. Audio is clear and free of any major
issues.
