Fans of Kenny Rogers' gun-slinging
Brady Hawkes will delight in owning this double-feature set
of two of his television films. In "The Gambler Returns,"
Rogers teams up with country music sensation Reba McEntire,
as the two rouse things up in their attempts to win the biggest
poker game around. Then in "The Gambler V," he is joined by
Loni Anderson and Dixie Carter as he races to save his son
when he falls in with a gang of ruthless bandits. The production
values are hopelessly cheesy, but ardent fans of Rogers and
his music will undoubtedly find these irresistible fun.

and Sound |
Time hasn't
been so kind to "The Gambler" movies, but they look better
on DVD than they could have. The biggest problem is age: there
is a great deal of film grain and source print blemishes present
here, while the picture looks muddy and unfocused many times.
Color saturation is good, but looks murky, while contrast
is solid for the most part. ***
The sound
is mastered in Dolby 2.0 Stereo, and is just fair in terms
of clarity. Sound effects are okay but need improvement in
regards to ambiance, while channel separation is okay but
nothing special. The track sounds congested in places, although
dialogue is natural for the most part.

Kenny
Rogers fans will no doubt want to pick this one up, even if
the transfers aren't too hot and the extras are missed. |
