General Hospital - Night Shift is the second spin-off
of the long-running classic drama series, General Hospital.
While the original show focused more on the medical drama
within the hospital walls, Night Shift takes on an after-hours
approach, focusing on other storylines. New characters and
old alike appear here. ***
The cast of Night Shift is excellent. Returning from
the original General Hospital are Kimberly McCullough and
Jason Thompson. New cast members include the legendary Billy
Dee Williams (Star Wars series, Brian's Song.) The cast,
new and old alike, all light up the screen and make for
some of the best television drama in years. ***
Despite the show being uneven at times and getting
a mixed critical reaction since its July 2007 debut, the
episodes are still solid and interesting - and the show
has even gotten the some of the highest ratings in SOAPnet
history! Even with the mixed reaction, cast and crew have
stated that a second season is already in the works (which
will most likely eventually get a DVD release, as well.)
***
The set has all thirteen episodes from the first season,
divided amongst three discs. The first season episodes are
Frayed Anatomies, Skin Need, Paternity Ward, Keep The Change,
Bed Bath And Be Gone, Love's Labors, Mother's Day, Employee
Of The Month, Gutter Ball, Falling Star, Fools In Love,
What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted, and Time Served.
Image And Sound:
As a recent series, Night Shift both looks and sounds
great on the DVD format. There aren't any major issues to
speak of - the show looks and sounds better than most of
the other TV shows out there that get DVD releases. ---

The set's only extra is a behind-the-scenes featurette
with the cast and crew. It's a nice little look at the history
and making of the series, but it will leave you wanting
more. You'll wish there were more featurettes - episode
commentaries would have been great, and hopefully Buena
Vista will put a few of those in later releases. ---
