Review:

Like the TV show "Medium" "Ghost Whisperer" is inspired by James Van Praagh a medium and paranormal investigator Mary Ann Winkowski. Jennifer Love Hewitt stars as Melinda Gordon who has the unique ability (well, not so unique after all since Allison Dubois from "Medium" also has this gift.maybe it's something in the water) to communicate with souls who haven't transitioned to the next level and reach the afterlife. Melinda is assisted by her husband Jim (David Conrad) and a lawyer Andrea Moreno (Aisha Tyler). The trio manages to help those souls cross over but not before they discover what mystery keeps the soul from moving on whether it be saying goodbye to someone they love or a murder mystery that must be solved. As all shows of this type must have a villain we get the "Wide Brim Hat Man" who has his own agenda in wanting to oppose Melinda. He's a pretty nasty character. ***

I'll admit I had never seen the series despite liking Hewitt before it came to DVD but I did find the show as compelling in its own way as "Medium". I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the show. ---

Image & Sound:

We get an anamorphic widescreen transfer that looks extremely good with nice vivid colors and sharp images. Occasional edge enhancement, pixilation and aliasing occur indicating that the transfer wasn't given quite as much care as it could have had. Still the show looks quite good and most fans won't notice these flaws. ***

The audio track is presented in the 5.1 digital surround format and sounds quite good. The surround tracks are used extremely well in some of the episodes that are more action driven. Overall dialogue comes across crisp and clear. ---

Special Features:

"Can You See me? The First Season of 'Ghost Whisperer'" features cast and crew in a featurette on the show. We get background on the pitch, development of the series and storylines in this featurette. ***

"Second Sight: The Clairvoyants of 'Ghost Whisperer'" features James Van Praagh and Mary Ann Winkowski discussing how they contribute to the show. Since I don't believe in any of this stuff I found this to be the least important featurette. They sounded to me like they were spinning some interesting yarns but nothing more. ***

A Tour of Grandview focuses on the town where the show takes place. We get a tour of the sets by star Hewitt. The mythology featurette curiously focuses on the creation of the opening titles. "Scare Tactics" allow the producers to discuss the visual effects of the show. Things are wrapped up with a couple of solid commentary tracks, deleted scenes, a blooper reel and previews. ---

Final Words:

"Ghost Whisperer" was quite entertaining and fans of the series will be happy with the extension special features included as part of the set. The presentation although not flawless looks better than the network broadcast and the set is nicely packaged.
