Review:

The OTHER popular series with supernatural overtones, the second season of “Ghost Whisperer” is based on the psychics Mary Ann Winowski and James Van Praagh. Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) can see dead people and she doesn’t have a problem with that. She uses her gifts to help free these spirits allowing them to pass on to the other side. ***

The first season ended with a corker of a cliff hanger; stuck in the limbo of spiritual purgatory afterlife Melinda’s friend Andrea faces an evil force that has been interfering with Melinda’s efforts. This evil force caused Andrea to die in a horrible accident. Melinda races to try and find a way to free her friend’s soul before the evil force can claim it. ---

Image & Sound: Is there a ghost of a chance this looks good on DVD? Yep. With vibrant, rich colors and nearly flawless image that only suffers from some mild compression issues, “Ghost Whisperer” looks marvelous in the afterlife of DVD. ***

Audio sounds quite good as well although the dialogue didn’t have as much depth as I would have expected. Overall, though, the show sounds wonderful with a wonderfully active (for a show like this) 5.1 mix. ---

Special Features:

Although the overall quality of special features here isn’t quite as strong as the first season, the second season has some nice extras. We get four audio commentaries although Jennifer Love Hewitt doesn’t appear on any of them. ***

“A Conversation with the Living” features the cast and creative crew discussing the episodes from the second season including the story arcs that occurred. Luckily, they avoid spoilers. ***

“Ghostly Visions” is a good featurette that gives the spotlight to the make up artists on the show. They show how they create the otherworldly look of many of the characters. ***

“Grandview Graveyard” is a cool featurette that allows the writers to discuss the background on the ghosts that appear six episodes from the second season. It gives added depth to the episodes and also displays the creative challenges and ideas that make a show like this tick. ***

“Melinda’s Closet” puts the spotlight on costume designer Joseph Porro. He discusses the designs for the clothing the characters in the show, the way it reflects their personalities and how it can add to the overall “character” of the series. ***

We also get a trailer and webisodes for “The Other Side” an on-line spin off of the series. A brief “behind the scenes” featurette is included on the show. ***

Finally we get an interactive game for adults and the teen/tween audience devoted to the show. “Crystal Ball Mind” where you pick a number, pair with a character from the show and the DVD game will predict what character you picked. ---

Final Words:

I would have predicted that “Ghost Whisperer” didn’t have a ghost of a chance lasting past the first season what with the mixed reception shows like this have received. Hewitt’s winning performance, the top notch supporting cast and creative crew proved up to the challenge of roping in an audience. It’s an excellent show that deserves a chance but I would start with season one first if you haven’t watched the show before.
