Review: |
Light and idiotic comedy can be
a good thing. Look at “The Three Stooges”. If you’re a Stooges
fan “Gilligan’s Island” is for you. Why? Because witty wordplay
isn’t the name of the game here—pratfalls and comedic turn
of events that are completely unbelievable is. “Gilligan’s
Island” came from a much simpler time when people didn’t ask
questions like, “if the professor is so smart why can’t be
design and build a boat?” or “Why did the wealthy Howells
want to hang with the common folks when they could have just
beached their own yacht?” Bob Denver became the ultimate sad
sack (along with Don Knotts). Why Gilligan was stranded on
an island with two beautiful womenand he still couldn’t get
lucky. Neither could the professor or the skipper. Mmmm I
see a trend here. Anyway, through three popular seasons the
castaways stayed isolated to a lucky TV audience’s delight
(I’m not even going to discuss the TV movies where they got
stranded again). I’m surprised there hasn’t been a theatrical
movie of this show yet. ---

and Sound: |
Featuring
vibrant faux tropical colors, “Gilligan’s Island” looks pretty
darn good on DVD. Warner has done its usual spectacular job
with the transfer for the third season. This was the first and
last season in color of the original series. The stock footage
in any TV show can be problematic (it’s been used and duped
so many times) and that’s no exception here. There are some
minor analog imperfections in the form of a bit of dirt here
and there but, on the whole, the episodes look splendid. ---

There’s
a good featurette with contemporary actors and—surprisingly—a
real live professor discuss the pop cultural aspect of the
show and why it endures. ---

As Sherwood
Schwartz points out that John Williams did the musical themes
that crop up throughout the episode (Schwartz co-wrote the theme
song with someone else). Schwartz discusses how a CBS executive
who got his start as a director had to step in to finish up
an episode when the director sliced his foot up. |

Words: |
Oh Gilligan,
we miss you and the days when wistful innocence. A very nice
transfer from Warner with nice extras, Gilligan fans will be
pleased. |
