Reviewer:

Studio: Rhino
Genre: Music
Release:
9/11/07
Special Features: Interview, music videos, 4 CD set, Book with comments about each track
Review:

An unsung wonder and country rock pioneer, Emmylou Harris counties to break boundaries with recent collaborations including Mark Knoplfer and producer/musician Daniel Lanosis. While her musical style might be an acquired taste for many primarily because it’s honest, direct and actually not designed to be product but an artistic statement, those who do listen to this songbird will find that the melodies will linger long after the CD/DVD is over. ***

Focusing album tracks, collaborations, singles and unreleased tracks that deserved a wider following, “Songbird” reminds me best of Springsteen’s “Tracks”; it can stand as an artistic statement on its own. The music CDs take up the bulk of this set and there are a number of terrific tracks on each one. ***

Image & Sound:

Unlike a lot of recently released CDs, “Songbird” has nice dynamics and while louder than a CD that might have been released a decade ago, it’s not so loud that it causes significant digital distortion and doesn’t sound as badly “brickwalled” as many new releases. Sure, it’s a bit louder than older CDs but it isn’t distractingly so. ***

The visual portion of this set is on the DVD included. Image quality varies from extremely good and clear to slightly soft. Colors are generally quite good but all of that, of course, depends on the source material. ---

Special Features:

The DVD features a series of TV appearances that Harris has made throughout her career. We also get a 200 page booklet with comments on each track by Harris while the discs are housed in another holder. Well designed, the set certainly will appeal to both collector’s and fans alike.

Final Words:

A terrific set that allows Harris to cherry pick personal favorites that got away including duets, unreleased tracks, rarities and album tracks, “Songbird” is an example of a great box set designed to appeal to both the artist and the fan sensibility.
