“Hart to Hart: The First Season”
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Columbia Tristar
Genre: Mystery
Release:
10/25/05
Special Features: Commentary on the pilot by Robert Wagner, Stephanie Powers and Tom Mankiewicz
Review:

Shooting for the sly appeal of the classic film series “The Thin Man” Sidney Sheldon (popular novelist, screenwriter and creator of “I Dream of Jeannie”) and Tom Mankiewicz’s ( writer of the films “Live and Let Die” and “Diamonds Are Forever”) “Hart to Hart” has a breezy style common to the time (later shows “Moonlighting” and “Remington Steele” used the same stylish music, witty dialogue and solid action sequences to bolster their drama) and made TV during the early 80’s much more enjoyable. The debonair Robert Wagner and luscious Stephanie Powers play a wealthy private detective team investigating mysteries with a touch of class and comedy with the assistance of the gravelly voiced Lionel Stander as Max. The transfer looks very nice with warm flesh tones and vivid color. Presented in the original mono format, the show is light fun froth. By the way usually these shows come with French and English audio tracks and/or subtitles. This is the first I’ve seen that only has English and Portuguese. Yes, Portuguese. I don’t know how many people in the US speak Portuguese but it seems to me this would have a much larger audience with a Spanish audio track. ---

Special Features: The first season of “Hart to Hart” comes with a marvelous commentary track featuring Robert Wagner, Stephanie Powers and writer/director Tom Mankiewicz. There’s tremendous chemistry and it’s clear that the trio enjoyed working together as they dish on each other and shooting the pilot episode of the TV show. There’s also a featurette with interviews. There are also previews for “Bewitched” (the TV show), “The Partridge Family” and previews for hits of the 80’s. ---

Final Words:

Fans who grew up on “Hart to Hart” won’t be disappointed. Columbia has done a very nice transfer for the show and although the extras are light, the commentary track on the pilot and the featurette are enjoyable.
