Sweden's Ignition are set to storm
the melodic rock scene in 2003 with their debut, self-titled
album. Featuring eleven fantastic tracks that simply demand
to be heard, the quality is perhaps less surprising when you
check out the song writing credits. Along with guitarist and
keyboard player, Peter Soderstrom, we have the likes of Bob
Marlette, Billy Sherwood, Clif Magnes and Tommy Funderburk
amongst others contributing sparkling melodic gems from start
to finish. The album kicks off with a pair of mid-tempo bullets,
"Down On My Luck" and "Tell Me Your Mine", both driven on
heavy riffs and featuring marvellous choruses. The feel of
these tracks is somewhere between the swagger of Ten and Snakes
in Paradise, with vocalist Jan Johansen cutting a classy Joe
Lynn Turner meets Klaus Meine feel. Every track offers something
special to the listener, with the clever use of dramatic arrangements
and orchestral effects adding a majestic quality to "Father
(Save Me)" and the absolute classic "Fire With Fire". If "Babylon"
sounds familiar, it is because it was featured on Starship's
"No Protection" album and is a complex and highly melodic
slice of eighties AOR heaven. This album retains it's quality
right to the last chords of closing track, "Time is Running
Out" which rides on a punchy verse and melodic picked riff.
This album will be one of the true highlights of the year.
