"IMAX: Deep Sea"
Reviewer:

Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre: Documentary
Release:
4/3/07
Special Features: Theatrical trailer, link to IMAX website
Review:

Rewatching "Twin Peaks" brought an idea to mind-commission David Lynch to do one of these Imax documentaries. He would bring his off-beat "peachy keen" skewed vision of the world to one of these and Heaven knows what subject he'd focus on. What better way to investigate the ocean if you can't swim, are afraid of water or generally dislike sharks. At 40 minutes "Deep Sea" falls short of the penetrating insight one would expect in a documentary then again this is more about the images and experience than learning itself. Featuring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet as narrators, "Deep Sea" is an appealing experience. Going with two such experienced actors as narrators is a bonus because they make the narration engaging and fun as needed and Danny Elfman's marvelously rich score works well at pulling you into this unfamiliar world. ---

Image & Sound:

"Deep Sea" takes us under the sea in a way that previous documentaries could not simply because of the higher quality images and rich, deep colors that the format usually captures. The 5.1 audio mix sounds unusually rich and while it doesn't make perfect use of the format it draws you in like a calm sea. ---

Special Features:

We get just a trailer however there is a link to online content as well.

Final Words:

An enjoyable documentary made more so by the participation of two appealing stars, a creative composer and riveting photography "IMAX: Deep Sea" will pull you under like a deceptive sea with a gripping undertow.
