Review:

The third installment of the Indiana Jones films turns back to religious artifacts and Nazis. This time Indy's father archeologist Henry Jones (Sean Connery) disappears while searching for the Holy Grail--Christ's chalice. When Indy, Marcus Brody (the marvelous character actor the late Denholm Elliot) and Dr. Elsa Schneider (Allison Doody) go in search for Jones and the Grail before the Nazi's can get hold of the cup that, legend has it, gives eternal life to. John Rhys-Davies returns as Sallah Indy's trusted friend and the late River Phoenix appears as a young Indy allowing us to discover how Indy developed a fear of snakes, developed an affection for his famous fedora and passion for reclaiming ancient artifacts. ***

Another strong film in the series, "The Last Crusade" gained the goodwill of fans with due to its strong performances by Ford, Elliot, Doody, Rhys-Davies and character actor Julian Glover as the villain of the film. It's a marvelous film that fans will enjoy. ---

Image & Sound:

A lovely transfer for the film "The Last Crusade" looks quite good although I didn't notice a huge improvement over the previous edition of the film on DVD.

The audio sounds good with a nice 5.1 mix.

Special Features:

While the special features do not include the rumored deleted scenes nor a commentary track, the new extras are quite good. We get a new introduction to the film. ***

"The Women" is from an AFI tribute to the original trilogy featuring the actresses that appeared in the films. "Friends and Enemies" focuses on the creation of the characters by Spielberg, Lucas and writer Lawrence Kasdan. We also get the storyboards for the marvelous opening sequence of the film. ***

Finally we get photo galleries for various props, marketing materials and production stills for the film. The "Lego Indiana Jones" trailer/demo also shows up on this set as well. ---

Final Words:

A film that more than held its own with the first film, "The Last Crusade" may lack a strong memorable villain for Indy (there's no one comparable to Belloq in the latter films) but it's still a fun romp.
