Review: |
Thos knuckleheads at "In Living
Color" managed to be both topical, funny and better than "Saturday
Night Live" during the same time frame. We get Homey the Clown,
the Homeboy skits and Fire Marshall Bill finally appear onscreen.
The show hit its peak here and during season three with some
of its most outrageous sketches. Although it wasn't critically
appreciated at the time like some shows, most of the humor
has dated quite well (something that can't be said about all
of the "SNL" stuff). The most dated material is the musical
numbers and dance sequences (despite some fine choregraphy)
which betray the time the show was originally aired. That's
not a bad thing particularly if you remember those times fondly.

| Image
and Sound: |
Although
videotaped, "ILC" looks very good in this transfer. The images
are crystal clear although they do betray their videotape origins
(as opposed to film) and, as a result, some of the textures
of the images aren't as rich as, say, a movie. That was true
of the show when it aired as well. Ultimately, it's about the
comedy and not about how it all looks. "ILC" sounds almost as
good as it looks with the stereo surround faithfully reproducing
the full sound of the original broadcast episodes. |
| The
Extras: |
There's
a "Season Two Overview" featurette as well as a solid featurette
entitled "Appreciating In Living Color". Although the featurettes
have interesting comments from Rosie Perez, Tommy Davidson
and David Alan Grier. Sadly, the Wayans brothers and Jim Carrey
are MIA from the special features section. We also get a third
featurette "Notorious in Living Color Characters" which focus
on some of the most popular and long lasting of the show's
bizarre assortment of characters.

| Commentary:
|
Rich and
funny often laced with surprising insight, the commentary track
for selected segments features Kim Bass and Buddy Sheffield
two of the staff writers for the show. Once again the Wayans
brothers and Jim Carrey are nowhere to be found on the commentary
track which is too bad as they would and could have provided
rich insight into the cavalcade of stars that surface during
the show's run as well as the many memorable characters presented.
We also might have found out a bit more about the development
and writing process from these performers/writers. --- |
| Final
Words: |
A very
funny show gets its due on DVD. While missing some key comments
from some of themost popular performers/writers, this is a great
chance to catch up with the show's second season and laugh until
your sides burst. |
