Why is it we enjoy seeing people make asses of themselves
on TV? Outside of the fact that it makes us appear smug
and superior in every way the reality is that it just makes
us laugh to see someone push the boundaries. “Jackass” is
extreme TV. The fact that many of these shows actually made
it on the air in our litigious society really surprises
me. It’s a good thing that Johnny Knoxville has a movie
career now because, honestly, I don’t know how much longer
anyone could do some of the extreme stunts and outrageous
performances seen in this show. I do have to question the
sanity of some these folks. Regardless, “Jackass” isn’t
a show for everyone. The show is shot on the cheap with
handheld cameras and as such the quality of the images and
sound vary quite a bit. There’s some video noise, issues
with drop outs and occasionally muffled dialogue ut that’s
not a surprise given how the show is shot. Audio is decent
for many of the “skits” included here. Oh, for fans that
must know this isn’t completely uncensored. Many of the
bad words are bleeped out although a few do make it through.

This boxed set is locked and
loaded for Xmas consumption. We get previously unseen footage,
over 50 unaired skits, and appearances on other shows. There’s
also a documentary where we find out what happened to the
stars of the show and where they are now. The entire “Gumball
Rally Special” is included along with cast commentary. The
“drunken” audio commentary will be of particular interest
to fans of the show as the cast razz each other but also do
maintain enough composure to give a bit of background on the
stunts performed. We also get a photo gallery and a 42 page
booklet as the final extras with this set. |

If you absolutely must see someone
make an ass of himself it’s better that it not be you or someone
you love. Fans of the show will enjoy this set since no season
sets will be forthcoming immediately. It’s a pretty good collection
overall with enough extras to make purchasing it a worthwhile
investment without feeling like a “jackass”. |
