“Jack of All Trades”
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Universal
Genre: Adventure
Release:
6/18/06
Special Features: Just Bruce Campbell’s chin
Review:

Although it isn’t as endlessly inventive as “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.”, “Jack of All Trades” provides a suitable vehicle for Bruce Campbell to mug his way through the 22 episodes of the first and second season of the show. Originally coupled with “Cleopatra 2525” in many markets “Jack” actually is a fun show with over-the-top performances and plots galore. Set at the turn of the 19th century Jack Stiles (Campbell) receives a special appointment from President Jefferson to protect a tiny island in the East Indies from being taken over by the French. Jack is pa rtnered with a stunning British secret agent named Emilia (Angela Dotchin) and the two of them also become involved with saving a kidnapped Ben Franklin from Napoleon (Vern Troyer aka Mini-Me from “Austin Powers”) who wants to use the master inventor to build a weapon of mass destruction and other fun but pretty silly adventures. Jack frequently appears masked folk hero the Dragoon while fighting the French and other nasties on the island of Pulau Pulau.

Image & Sound:

“Jack” looks quite good with natural skin tones and bright, vibrant colors. The images are free for the most part from dirt and debris. Overall “Jack” looks quite pleasing in its original full screen presentation. The audio likewise sounds quite good but hasn’t been remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1 and features the standard 2.0 stereo mix that accompanied the original airing of the show. ---

Special Features:

Unlike Warner’s Bruce Campbell show “The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.” “Jack” doesn’t have any special features not even a gag reel. That’s disappointing as I’m sure that Campbell would have provided a great commentary track or two if he had been contacted to participate in the release. I’m sure there’s also behind-the-scenes promotional footage of the show and a gag reel somewhere out there. It’s a pity Universal didn’t take the time to dig them up as it would have made nice, additional and inexpensive special features for this set. ---

Final Words:

Clearly unearthed to benefit from the “Brisco” high profile release, “Jack” isn’t as good a show nor is it packaged as well. The Warner release for “Brisco” is top notch and it’s a pity that Universal chose NOT to release “Jack” in a similar manner. Both are popular cult shows (although “Brisco” would win by more than a nose in a horse race). Nevertheless the price is right (which is clearly what Universal thought…they want you to pick this up at the same time you’re buying “Brisco”) and the show is silly but solid fun.
