“"J.A.G: The Complete Season Four
Reviewer:
Wayne Klein
Studio: Paramount Home Video
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
8/7/07
Special Features: None
Review:

The fourth season of "Jag" arrives on DVD and while it doesn't have the bells and whistles that one would hope for, it's a solid season set. J.A.G. stands for Judge Advocate General an office in the military that investigates and prosecutes crimes related to the Navy and Marine Corps. Our hero in the series Lt. Command "Harm" Rabb Jr. (David James Elliot) and his partner Major Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie tackle these difficult cases which range from acts of terrorism to espionage in the military. ***

The bad news for fans of the series is that this set does have music replacements. Unfortunately, I didn't see the 4th season when it aired. The 4th season opens with "Gypsy Eyes" in which Harm continues to search for his father in Russia. These episodes originally ran from 1998-9. The good news is that fans do get the uncut episodes but with music substitutions can this truly be considered "uncut" and "complete"? Among the episodes during season four:

Gypsy Eyes

Embassy

Innocence

Going After Francesca

The Martin Baker Fan Club

Act of Terror

Angels 30

Mr. Rabb Goes to Washington

People vs. Mac

The Black Jet

Jaggle Bells

Dungaree Justice

War Stories

Webb of Lies

Rivers'Run

Silent Service

Nobody's Child

Shakedown

The Adversaries

Second Sight

Wilderness of Mirrors

Soul Searching

Yeah

Baby Goodbyes ---

Images & Sound:

The third season looks quite good in its presentation here. Although not quite up to the quality of some of CBS/Paramount's other releases, the colors are bold and image sharpness very good. I was surprised that there was a fair amount of dirt and debris in some shots. Usually this is something you'll see in a much older show not in a show this recent. ---

Special Features:

Beyond the usual assortment of Paramount/CBS previews, there aren't any which is a pity. Since fans can routinely see this in syndication (without any music cuts although the episodes might be trimmed for more commercials), it would certainly act as an incentive for fans of the show. At the very least Paramount could give a preview of forthcoming seasons similar to Universal's for their "Quantum Leap" sets. ---

Final Words:

A strong season hobbled on DVD by a lack of extras and music changes, fans of "JAG" would do just as well to record these onto DVD themselves to get the original episodes without alterations to the music. There aren't any special features although the transfers look pretty decent with nice bold colors.
