“The Very Best of Mick Jagger-Mick Jagger”
Reviewer:
Wayne Klein
Studio: Rhino Home Video
Genre: Music Videos/Music
Release:
10/11/07
Special Features: DVD with music videos, interview, excerpt from the documentary "Being Mick"
Review:

A combination DVD/CD release of Mick Jagger’s greatest solo hits, “The Very Best of Mick Jagger” ( as opposed to just "The Best of Mick Jagger") combines many of Jagger’s best solo songs from his four albums along with singles (“Dancing in the Streets”) and unreleased recordings with other notable musicians (“Too Many Cooks” produced by John Lennon). It’s a top notch collection of Jagger’s solo material where he can tackle styles that the Stones might not do. The CD portion doesn’t exactly mirror the DVD (that’s a good thing) but does include the bulk of the titles from the CD. A pity that no one shot footage of Lennon and Jagger in the studio together as that would have been historic and worthwhile to have. ---

Image & Sound:

Image quality varies depending upon the source material. For example the image quality for “Dancing in the Street” looks pretty decent. The appearance on Saturday Night Live from 1978 is the softest looking with runny colors but that’s simply due to the source material. Audio varies from decent to very good depending upon when the videos were shot. ---

Special Features:

1) Interview with Mick Jagger- This is a solid interview that could have had more substance if we could have also heard outtakes from things such as the John Lennon produced segement.

2) God Gave Me Everything

3) Just Another Night

4) Sweet Thing

5) Let’s Work

6) Lucky In Love

7) Don’t Tear Me Up-These are all music videos that vary in quality depending on the director.

8) Dancing In The Street with David Bowie- Originally shot as part of “Live Aid” and presented during the broadcast, this studio shot video is the first time this has been seen since it was originally broadcast.

9) Joy (from the documentary “Being Mick”)

10) (You Got To Walk And) Don’t Look Back (Saturday Night Live, 1978)-Peter Tosh with Mick Jagger

Final Words:

Fans will enjoy this set. This is superior to the recent Ringo Starr release that had both DVD and CD in that we get significantly more and better quality videos. While Jagger’s solo career has never taken off like the Stones, he’s tackled interesting and diverse material that wouldn’t have fit within the Stones canon for the most part. The best stuff here such as “Memo From Turner” from “Performance” and “Too Many Cooks” produced by John Lennon during his infamous lost weekend makes this well worth picking up. The DVD portion is something that Jagger fans will turn to again and again particularly with the inclusion of “Dancing in the Streets”.
