Johnny and the Sprites is one of the latest Disney
franchises catered towards very young children. It began
its life on the Disney Channel in the form of 5-minute shorts,
but was quickly expanded to fill a half-hour programming
block. ***
The show follows the life of the title character, who
moves into a home given to him by a relative. At this new
home, he meets up with the Sprites - some interesting beings
who he quickly befriends, and begins teaching them about
human lives through various forms of entertainment. ***
The series was created by and stars John Tartaglia,
who previously had minor fame in other roles, including
being a puppeteer on Sesame Street in his teens, and acting
on the hit Broadway musical, Avenue Q. He is no stranger
to the world of entertainment, and puts his skills to good
use here. ***
With a mixture of music and fun, colorful characters,
this is a great series to entertain young children, particularly
those in the pre-school age bracket. The DVD gives you a
pretty good variety of episodes, and they'll definitely
keep your young child entertained. ---
Image And Sound:
This is an average DVD transfer, nothing less, nothing
more. There are some minor picture issues, but nothing that
will really ruin the experience. The sound is good as far
as dialogue and sound effects go, but you'll wish they did
more for the sound during the full-blown song sequences.
Still, considering this is a series aimed at pre-schoolers,
are they really going to complain? ---
