Review:

Johnny Was is a drug filled drams that tells the story of Johnny Doyle (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels Vinnie Jones) and ex-terrorist, as he tried to hide from his past while building a future without guns or drugs. While he climbs the ladder to freedom, Johnny is paid a visit by his trouble making buddy Flynn. Flynn is accompanied by another escaped con named Michael who hurt his leg while busting out of the big house. With Michael slowing him down Flynn has no choice but to ask his old friend for help in fleeing the cop infested city. While fighting his own inner demons, Johnny makes the mistake of falling for Julius (ERs Eric La Selle), the local drug lord's girlfriend played by former pop star Samantha Mumba.****

Even though I found the movie confusing yet predictable, it made for a descent gangster movie. Full of graphic violence and detailed drug scenes, it shows a dark look at the London streets. Lennon Lewis had a stand out performance in his film debut, and it was fun to watch Eric La Selle go so far off the beaten path. I have not seen so much charisma since his undiscovered role in Crazy as Hell.

Image and Sound:

The picture quality was ok but nothing special. However the sound is terrible. The movie is accompanied by a reggae soundtrack from DJ producer Adrian Sherwood. I found the music enjoyable but through most of the movie it overpowered the dialogue which made it extremely difficult to follow.

Special Features:

There was nothing special about the features, just basic dvd functions like scene selection, previews and close captioning.

Final Words:

This was a descent movie but nothing spectacular. It will fit right in with the other drug filled dramas, just a little more depth in the end.
