Phil Weston (Will Farrell) lives in his dad Buck’s (Robert
Duvall) shadow. He doesn’t have any athletic ability but
when he steps in to coach is son’s soccer team after Buck
has traded him to the worst team in the league; he discovers
a backbone he didn’t know he had. Playing like a more user
friendly version of “The Bad News Bears”, “Kicking and Screaming”
is surprisingly funny and charming. The reviews were decidedly
mixed for this comedy and I’m at a loss as to why; perhaps
it didn’t meet the expectations of critics but “Kicking
and Screaming” is a family friendly bit of entertainment.

“The Red Cards” include deleted
scenes from the film. “The Yellow Cards” focuses on outtakes.
There’s also alternate takes and a quartet of good featurettes
“From Rome to Hollywood”, “Soccer Camp”, “Behind-the Next:
The Making of ‘Kicking and Screaming’ and “Kickin’ It with
the Kids”. I’ve found more and more of these featurettes are
becoming perfunctory and, while these aren’t the best featurettes
I’ve seen, it’s not the reason you buy the movie. Commentary
tracks have also begun to dry up on many new releases. Perhaps
that’s just as well as it seems as if we have a generation
of directors who just can’t tell a verbal story very well.
Unfortunately, we don’t get a commentary track here from ANYONE.
Will Ferrell would have worked quite nicely thank you. ---

Final Words:
|
An enjoyable comedy, “Kicking
and Screaming” is rated PG for colorful language, some adult
themes and violence. Oh, wait a minute that perfectly describes
the all American film! Ferrell and Duvall spark off each other
really well and that’s half the fun of this comedy. |
