Every year there is film, which is absolutely genius,
which nobody saw, and in my own humble opinion there were
two films, which went under the radar really fast, one was
Tony Scott's misunderstood gem of a film "Domino" and Shane
"Lethal Weapon Creator" Black's directorial debut "Kiss
Kiss,Bang Bang". The film is about a thief in New York who
is stealing some toys for Christmas (a theme in many of
Shane Black's scripts) for his nephew or something along
those lines and guess what? The alarm goes off so he has
to run as fast as he can to not get arrested and he runs
into an casting call for a film in L.A, he goes their and
meets Gay Perry and there is a mystery and he meets the
girl in High School he has a crush on etc. ***
I really don't like explaining what went on in the
film because everybody should experience films spoiler free
but I know the twist in "The Crying Game" and I've never
seen the film! So I'm really just full of crap so before
I bore the read stupid of my insaneness, I'll go on why
this film is so damn great. ***
The film is a modern film noir masterpiece because
Shane Black's script is as sharp as a Hattori Hanzo Sword.
Val Kilmer (underrated actor) is a detective who is called
"Gay Perry" and guess what "He is gay" but the cool thing
about the film is he is not a some soft spoken, limping
wrist, make up, cross dressing gay man at all, he is real
hard man, tough as Mickey Rourke character "Marv" in "Sin
City". ***
The thief is played by one of my favorite actors ROBERT
DOWNEY JR. who lately had a nice string of small Indy films
like "Good Night And Good Luck", "A Scanner Darkly", "Game
6" and "Eros" and will also be in David Fincher's upcoming
flick "Zodiac" (does it sound like I'm plugging films or
what? I'm not actually, I hate no industry connection except
for maybe Richard Kelly or Terry Gilliam (who are my heroes
and I've met Gilliam and I've chatted to Richard Kelly)
but he is one of those actors who has had a lot of trouble
in the last ten year with drugs, getting divorced and to
be honest he should be dead (due to his health condition
for a few years and a lot of Heroin use) but he is sober
and is back on best OCD form as Harry Lockheart in Kiss
Kiss, Bang Bang, the unlucky thief for gets a shot at frame
and of course doesn't get the part (it doesn't matter anyway,
trust me), RD Jr. and Val have some of the best chemistry
in film since Ed Norton and Brad Pitt in "Fight Club" (look
another Fincher reference!, this film has nothing to do
at all with Fincher and is nothing like his flicks!), who
know they had a lot of fun and with a script so original
with really great lines (I'm gonna say them because it will
ruin it) and their endlessly quotable. Michelle Monaghan
gives a great performance as the dame of the film; she will
be a lot more films in the future. ***
The Direction is brilliant, brilliant use of the L.A
surroundings; a lot of fun and a great modern film noir,
2005 has been the revival of the film noir genre with Sin
City, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Brick (even though it was
released in 06, many people saw at festivals in 05). Brilliant,
hilarious fun entertaining 100 minutes, buy it now! ***
Image, Sound:
The Image is as a clear as the sunniest day in California,
beautiful transfer. Great 5.1 mix. ***
