Although it can’t compare to “The Emperor’s New Groove”,
this direct-to-video sequel isn’t a bad way to spend an
evening with the kids. Featuring a clever script and great
vocal performance by Patrick Warburton (“Seinfeld”, “The
Tick”), “Kronk’s New Groove” starts off winningly but the
limited animation (despite a nice production design) and
lack of developments in the plot to hinder this from being
better than average. *** Kronk lives his childhood dream
by running his own restaurant. When a letter arrives from
his father (John Mahoney) Kronk’s groove gets thrown off—Dad’s
coming to visit and Kronk’s concerned because his father
never approved of his dream to be a chef. Kronk is determined
to win his father’s approval and begins courting Ms. Birdy
(Tracey Ullman). Featuring vocal cameo appearances by the
cast of “Emperor, “Kronk” will keep the kids entertained
even if it doesn’t warrant the repeat viewings of “Emperor”.

We get a trio of extras including
“Kronk’s Brain Game”, “Pyramid Scheme” both of which are passable
games that kids might play once or twice. The “making-of”
featurette provides an interesting glimpse into the genesis
and production of this direct-to-video sequel. |

Final Words:
|
“Kronk” is at least worth a
rental and the DVD is sufficiently entertaining enough to
keep the kids from destroying the house while you’re waiting
to open Christmas gifts. |
