The Review:

A guilty pleasure for all intents and purposes, “Laguna Beach” takes a look at the ultra privlaged spoiled brats that occupy one of the wealthiest communities in Southern California. Leave it to MTV to dredge up another reality show that nobody really needs. The good news is that this show brings new meaning to the world tedium. Perhaps MTV should use its resources for something truly useful and fascinating vs. producing more junk like this that pollutes the airwaves. Yes, it’s real but honestly how real can it be if there are TV cameras recording every histrionic moment in these overly indulged vacant vapid teenagers lives? Dive into the water it’s shallow, cold and will remind you that the reason the rich are different from you and me is because their money has fed into their vanity and robbed them of any ambition beyond being this week’ fashion hit. Unfortunately, this series will appear yet again which means we haven’t seen the end of these idiots. It’s clear that MTV was hoping to jump on the bandwagon of the successful prime time soap “The O.C.” it just would have been nice if they had demonstrated any creativity and imagination in the process. It seems as if that’s at a premium these days and something that continues to elude the musically challenge music channel. ---

Image and Sound: A nice transfer but I’m unclear as to why MTV has chosen to release this in widescreen. Keep in mind this was shot on video so video noise rears its ugly head (the only ugliness there is in this series about “beautiful” people). I never saw this show during its run on MTV so can’t say if any licensing issues meant that music had to be replaced. The audio is pretty decent with the dialog crisp and clear in most episodes. There were some issues with lip flap in one episode where the dialog is out of synch with the images a bit and an issue with a microphone meant that one guy’s dialog was a bit difficult to make out at times. Overall, an OK transfer of a show shot on digital video. ---
The Extras:

There’s about 45 minutes of deleted scenes in this set although I could easily have found, oh, more than 3 hours that should have been deleted. There’s cast interviews that that truly demonstrate that sometimes the extras are worse than the episodes of a TV show. “LC’s House Tour” gives us a guided tour of LC’s home. Honestly, a guided tour of someone’s home? Unless you’re a stalker or a thief I can’t think of any reason to want to see it. “The Laguna Triangle” is aptly named and a very funny pun. Perhaps “The Laguna Triangle” (the trio of Stephen, LC and Kristin) should disappear into the Bermuda Triangle. Then we’ll know once and for all if it’s true that things that go in never come out. “Casting Tapes” features interviews with cast members prior to the taping of the show so it’s a glimpse of the cast in the raw. Perhas MTV should have cooked them before serving them. Kristin and Trey appear at the MTV studio and discuss the show after the finale was aired. There’s also a number of music videos so I suppose this does justify someone’s job at MTV. Sadly, most of these videos are some of the least appealing that MTV aired. There’s also access to a VIP website available as part of a DVD-ROM portion of the DVDs. I didn’t take the time to log on there so can’t say what awaits you. My guess is that the portal to Hell may be located there. Sadly, we get a “Season 2 Sneak Preview” with 3 minutes of tripe from the NEXT season. Oh joy I’ll have to review another set of this insipid show. ---

Commentary: No commentary track
Final Words: Watching this stuff is like a giant brain drain which leads me to suspect that MTV plans on taking over the world by boring viewers to death before completely sucking out what’s left of a viewer’s brains. Image quality is pretty decent as is audio and there’s loads of bonus material and, luckily, it’s a little more pleasant than being encased in an Iron Maiden. Truly MTV has hit a new low with this insipid series that doesn’t even have the originality to try something different than take a look at the kids that occupy the world of the real “O.C.” . Some worlds need to be left undiscovered. This is one of them. This show is evil and is in serious need of an exorcism. I did discover one thing, however, if the anti-christ ever comes he’ll be on this show and from Orange County. The populrity of this show demonstrates what a sad world we live in.
