“Laverne and Shirley - Season Four”

Special Features: A
Review:

Starring Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, Laverne and Shirley was the first show to be spun-off from Happy Days. The show ran from 1976-1983 and was the brainchild of Garry Marshall (Penny's brother, and the man heavily responsible for Happy Days as well. ***

The four-disc set contains all of the episodes from the shows fourth season. Episodes included are as follows: Festival (two-parter), Playing the Roxy, The Robbery, The Quiz Show, Laverne And Shirley Go To Night School, Date With Eraserhead, The Bully Show, A Visit To The Cemetery, Chorus Line, Laverne and Shirley Move In, Dinner For Four, It's A Dog's Life, Oh Come All Ye Bums, Who's Papa, The Third Annual Shotz Talent Show, Supermarket Sweep, Lenny's Crush, Fire Show, Squiggy In Love, The Feminine Mistake, The Tenants Are Revolting, There's A Spy In My Beer, and Shirley And The Older Man. ***

Laverne and Shirley was an entertaining series, one of the last truly great ones to come from Garry Marshall. The performances from Marshall and Williams are classics, and it's no surprise the show maintains a cult following. Equally impressive is the supporting cast, who has included just individuals as Ed Begley Jr., Phil Foster, and even a pre-Spinal Tap Michael McKean. ***

Running for eight seasons, the show always managed to stay fresh. Many fans will argue that show declined in its latter-few seasons, and I won't argue with that. But this set captures the series at its halfway point, when the cast and crew were all at the top of their game. If you're only going to buy one of the season sets, this is a fine choice. ---

Image And Sound:

The transfer quality stays true to the earlier season sets. Colors are a bit faded, no doubt due to the age of the source material, but the image is clear throughout and the original mono audio easy-to-hear and free of any major flaws.

Special Features:

None

Final Words:

This is a fantastic series that is as fun to watch now as it's ever been, although this reviewer can't help but be disappointed by the lack of bonus material in the set. Still, don't let that stop you from picking it up if you're a fan.
