The Review:

Universal has taken an unusual tactic with the release of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Instead of releasing the first four seasons, they’ve skipped ahead to the fifth season. The reason, ostensibly, is to promote the sixth season of the show which premiered in September. It’s bold, unusual, smart and likely to alienate fans of the first four seasons prior which featured the popular Stephanie March. On the other hand, it does dovetail nicely with season six allowing new fans to find out what had occurred during the prior season. ---

Image and Sound: The Fifth Season looks very good on DVD. Solid blacks and sharp, detailed clear images make this a nice set to start with. Hopefully the other four seasons when they are released will show as much detail with rich colors and nicely textured images. The sound has considerable presence. The 2.0 Dolby Digital Surround Sound stereo mix sounds vibrant and has considerable detail. ---
The Extras:

Although a bit skimpy on the extras, those that are included provide a nice background on the series. We get “Police Sketches” of the various actors on the show including Ice T, B.D. Wong, Dan Florek whose character first appeared on the parent program “Law & Order” during its first couple of seasons. We also get a glimpse back at some of the previous seasons stars as well. While nothing earth shattering is revealed and the depth of the profiles live up to their names, they do give a nice background for those unfamiliar with the previous accomplishments of the series stars. ---

Commentary: No commentary tracks.
Final Words: An unusual strategy may pay off for Universal with the release of the fifth season prior to the previous years. While the extras are a bit on the skimpy side, they’re not bad and, hopefully, we’ll see some commentary on future seasons.
