The Review:

"Law and Order" officially became the "Star Trek" of television crime dramas with this spinoff, its second, following "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit". "Criminal Intent" began in 2001 and has matched the level of success of the other two "Law and Order" series. This set collects the entire first season, 22 episodes in total. ***

"Criminal Intent" alters the "Law and Order" formula somewhat, by focusing its time on the criminals planning and perpetrating the crimes as well as those tracking them down. Vincent D'Onofrio (perhaps best known as Pvt. Pyle from "Full Metal Jacket")stars as Detective Robert Goren, who solves crimes with the aid of his partner, Detective Alexandra Eames, played by Kathryn Erbe. Their partnership has been described as a sort of "Watson and Holmes" dynamic. Jamey Sheridan also stars as Captain James Deakins. ***

"Criminal Intent" has succeeded in transferring a successful show formula to a third program without the well running dry. D'Onofrio, who most of the show revolves around, dives headfirst into a complex character who uses unorthodox methods to track down those he is after. If you are a fan of the show and the "Law and Order" brand as a whole, jump right in.

Image and Sound:

The show comes in its original full screen broadcast format, and looks much like any show transferred to DVD: pleasant, but unsurprising. ***

The sound is also routine for a television broadcast on DVD, with a Dolby Surround track that confines itself mostly to the front channels. French and Spanish 2.0 tracks are also included. --

The Extras: A documentary, "Criminal Intent: The Beginning", is included on the disc, and details the origins and creation of the show. There are no deleted scenes or TV spots, although I'm sure there are plenty of them lying around, and the show's fans would have loved that.
Commentary: None
Final Words: The first year of the newest and perhaps most intriguing of the three "Law and Order" shows is here to be enjoyed by the millions of "Law and Order" junkies out there (and you know who you are). Worth the purchase if you can's get enough "L&O".
