"Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection: Volume 4"
Reviewer:
Wayne Klein
Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
11/14/04
Special Features: Wrong Turn at Albuquerque
Review:

Unlike most animation purists I can't see why anyone would begrudge a fan purchasing the "Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection" sets. While they are less comprehensive, feature less cartoons and have no extras to special of (except this set), they are a great inexpensive way to get many of the classic Warner Brothers shorts in unedited form sporting terrific looking transfers. Let's be honest here folks-not everyone wants to spend $64.99 (retail) for a four disc set of cartoons. Most folks can justify, however, spending $28.99 (retail again) for a two disc set featuring the highlights of these four disc boxed sets. ***

For the record this two disc set assembles 28 classic shorts focusing only on Bugs Bunny and the feline disc of the four discs set. Disc one includes Roman Legion-Hare, The Grey Hounded Hare, Rabbit Hood, Operation: RABBIT, Knight-mare Hare, Southern Fried Rabbit, Mississippi Hare, Hurdy-Gurdy Hare, Forward March Hare, Sahara Hare, Barbary-Coast Bunny, To Hare is Human, 8 Ball Bunny, Knighty Knight Bugs, Rabbit Romeo. ***

Disc two sports felines galore from a series of cartoons from the late 30's and early 40's throughout the 50's. Disc two includes The Night Watchman, Conrad the Sailor, The Aristo-Cat, Dough Ray Me-ow, Pizzicato Pussycat, Kiss Me Cat, Cat Feud, The Unexpected Pest, Go Fly a Kit, Kiddin' the Kitten, A Peck o' Trouble, Mouse and Garden, Porky's Poor Fish, Swallow the Leader ---

Image & Sound:

Once again Warner has done a terrific job of cleaning up the classic cartoons included here. Colors are bright and vivid and I didn't really notice any issues with digital compression. All are presented in their original full screen presentation. There are stray bits and pieces of dust and dirt that are part of the original cartoons (its due to dust and dirt on the animation cels that were there during the photography stage of the cartoons). Audio sounds terrific with dialogue, music and sound effects are wonderfully clear.

Special Features:

We get a montage of Bugs' bad sense of direction in "Wrong Turn at Albuquerque" as Bugs goes all over the world pulling the wool over other classic character's eyes. It's a nice little clever, funny and witty featuette. I'm pleased that Warner chose to include something as the previous sets were pretty dry when it came to any extras. ---

Final Words:

This two disc set would be the way to go for those on a budget or who just want the cartoons NOT the special features. Be warned you basically get discs one and four of the "Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume Four" without any of the extras, commentary tracks and rare cartoons that appear on that set. Nevertheless this is a nice set for fans of classic Warner animation who might not want to spring for the extras or simply detest Speedy Gonzales as much as I do (he gets an entire disc on the "Golden Collection").
