The Review:

During the second season MacGyver continued to get out of a difficult situation using his best resource—his brain. During season two MacGyver and four street youths get stranded when their plane crash and must fight for survival: MacGyver encounters a friend who is passing himself off as the reincarnation of a Chinese legend; MacGyver hooks up with his former fiancée in Asia. Unfortunately both are now on the run when they’re pursued by troops when they try to rescue orphans. So, as usual MacGyver continues to get into trouble but always figures out some way to get out of it without killing everyone.

Image and Sound: Picture quality for a series from a decade ago looks pretty decent but it could have been cleaned up a bit more. MacGyver definitely could have used one of his famous paperclips or other misc. materials to spruce this up. I’m a bit disappointed at how soft the picture is occasionally. Clarity is decent and color good but it could be a whole lot better. The mono sound hasn’t really been enhanced all that much; it appears that it’s been compressed a bit here and there so the dialog and sound effects are a trifle louder than I expected. ---
The Extras:

We get Universal’s usual previews but nothing in the way of extras about the series. That’s too bad because if they offered Richard Dean Anderson enough money he would probably do a featurette on the series as well as commentary tracks (he does them for “Stargate SG-1”). Although not an extra per se, we do get the original broadcast versions of the series vs. the syndicated versions (at least as far as I can tell). ---

Commentary: No commentary track.
Final Words: A solid transfer that could aspire to be so much better, “MacGyver” doesn’t look bad it could just look really, really exceptional if the money was spent on it to spiff it up. Clearly Universal doesn’t feel that the audience is there to warrant spending a lot of money on it. They’d have to price it in the range of “Battlestar:Galatica” or one of their other premium series. It’s a pity that Universal doesn’t take a lesson from Warner Brothers Home Video or even Fox. They could, for example include vintage interviews or even appearances done for shows on NBC (since they are owned by the same parent company now). Oh well, perhaps we’ll see extras on the final season as Sony has done with some of their vintage shows or Paramount has done with “Frasier”. It’s not likely that Universal will be dong that as demonstrated by some of their other TV on DVD releases but if you are a fan and write them to let them know you’d like to have the series with extras, they may comply.
