“MacGyver: The Complete Fifth Season”
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Paramount
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
3/13/06
Special Features: None
Review:

With the quality of the writing taking a nose dive the fifth season of “MacGyver” is probably not the place to start collecting this show. The first four seasons were better written overall although there was an occasional dip in quality in those seasons as well. Still the show got off to a bad start from the first two episodes of season five and just never quite recovered despite some fine episodes and a consistently winning performance from Richard Dean Anderson in the title role.

Image & Sound:

One step up two steps back seems to the buzz word for this series on DVD. The series has improved in its presentation while the writing of the series took a definite turn for the worst. Color is pretty good overall (unless there’s stock footage used) although the image quality is soft in most of the episodes. The fifth season isn’t perfect but it’s a distinct improvement on previous releases (particularly the dismal looking first and third seasons). The 2.0 stereo mix sounds surprisingly feisty with clear, crisp dialogue.

Special Features: It seems that the more invention in a series the less likely it will receive extras. Paramount once again lets everyone down by continuing to show a complete lack of interest in doing anything special for this series. The only good news is that Paramount isn’t using DVD18s for this set pumping out MacGyver on dual layered single side discs. I guess that’s the only extra we’re going to get. It seems if you’re not “Star Trek” you don’t get extras.

Final Words:

Disappointing in terms of the writing quality but improved in picture quality the fifth season of MacGyver is a mixed bag. I was kind of hoping for some sort of extras but that would be expecting too much for this fine series.
